Academic Year, Fall, Spring, Summer

Direct Enroll at the University of Oviedo

With over 400 years of history, the University of Oviedo has situated itself as a reference academic institution in different disciplines and has stood out for providing high quality teaching and conducting cutting edge research. It was one of the first universities in Spain to receive accreditation as a Campus of International Excellence in 2009. With an international calling, close ties to the region and a strong commitment to the transfer of knowledge to the business world, the University of Aviedo offers a full range of undergraduate degrees in all branches of knowledge and postgraduate degree programs in collaboration with national and international universities and more than 250 companies.

The University of Oviedo has a very strong drive for research, undertaking 80% of the R&D and Innovation activities carried out in Asturias. With cutting-edge services and facilities, the income the university obtains from scientific output amounts to around 40 million euros a year, with nearly 500 contracts or agreements with companies to carry out research projects. The University of Oviedo activities go beyond its campuses with its strong commitment to its community and the Asturian society at large.

Direct Enrollment

Direct Enrollment is an option for students wishing to study in high interest areas such as the University of Oviedo when there are not exchange placements available. Students pay tuition and fees directly to the University of Oviedo and NOT to Virginia Tech. Please be aware that direct enrollment is very different from bilateral exchange as far as payment and federal financial aid and scholarships are concerned. Federal financial aid, institutional grants and scholarships may or may not apply. (be sure to review the eligibility requirements of any institutional aid so as to not jeopardize the award).

Oviedo lies within Asturias, just twenty-one miles from the coast and not too far from Portugal. While Oviedo has a charming old-town center, museums, and significant historic architectural sites, it is also a modern city with a dynamic cultural life including concerts, opera, theater, and exhibitions.

Oviedo has been a university town since the early seventeenth century. The University of Oviedo has more than 25,000 students and 1,600 faculty members, and welcomes more than 1,000 international students each year. Since there are few English-speaking visitors, it's an excellent location for language and culture immersion.

Approximate Semester Dates

Semester 1 (Fall): September - December (exams occur in January)
Semester 2 (Spring): January - May (exams occur in June)

*Academic calendar does not align with VT's academic calendar. This may affect the date of your financial aid disbursement.

VT students from all areas of study are eligible. Participants are expected to meet the following criteria:

  • Have completed at least one full year of study at Virginia Tech. Students are encouraged to participate in this exchange program in their sophomore, junior, or senior year.
  • Be in good standing with a minimum overall GPA of 2.5. Preference may be given to students with higher GPAs.
  • Some coursework may be done in English at the University of Oviedo, but Virginia Tech students normally are expected to have completed SPAN 3105 and 3106 with a “B” or better, or to have satisfactory proficiency in all Spanish language skills. Students are able to study in Oviedo who have not completed SPAN 3105 and 3106 by enrolling in Casa de las Lenguas for an additional fee.
