Program Description:

University of Oviedo

Oviedo lies within Asturias, just twenty-one miles from the coast and not too far from Portugal.  While Oviedo has a charming old-town center, museums, and significant historic architectural sites, it is also a modern city with a dynamic cultural life including concerts, opera, theater, and exhibitions.

Oviedo is a university town, as it has been for since the early seventeenth century. The University of Oviedo has more than 40,000 students and 1,600 faculty members, and welcomes more than 1,000 international students each year. Since there are few English-speaking visitors, it's an excellent location to for language and culture immersion.

Program Description:

An agreement established between Virginia Tech and the University of Oviedo provides for the exchange of undergraduate and graduate students between the two institutions. Virginia Tech graduate students are invited to apply for the exchange for next semester through the graduate program page.

Academics

The University of Oviedo offers a full range of courses in all academic disciplines. There are also a wide variety of Spanish language and culture courses for international students. Click here to explore Oviedo's degree programs and course offerings.

Program Costs

  • Students on exchange pay Virginia Tech tuition and fees when studying at the University of Oviedo.
  • Please note that if you opt into the INTENSIVE LANGUAGE COURSE, the short-term study prior to the start of the semester is offered through Casa de las lenguas on a direct pay model and is not a part of the Oviedo Exchange Program. Paying tuition to a foreign institution not on the Title IV funding list is not eligible for federal financial aid and so students will need to budget accordingly if opting into the Intensive Language Course.
  • For the exchange semester, the cost of room and board is paid to the host institution.
  • An additional program fee, an orientation fee, required insurance and travel/personal expenses apply. See budget sheet for more information.
  • Out-of-state students may inquire about the cost of directly enrolling at la Universidad de Oviedo. It should be noted that direct enrollment is considered taking a leave of absence from Virginia Tech and paying tuition to a foreign institution not on the Title IV funding list is not eligible for federal financial aid and has the potential to jeopordize specific institutional scholarships and grants so students will need to budget accordingly.

Eligibility

VT students from all areas of study are invited to apply to take advantage of this exchange opportunity. Participants in the exchange are expected to meet the following criteria:

  • Be in good standing at the home institution and present a minimum overall GPA of 2.5. Although preference may be given to students according to the greater strength of their GPA. Exceptions to the minimum GPA requirement may also be considered on an individual basis.
  • Satisfy the language proficiency requirement for admission to the host institution. Some coursework may be done in English at the Universidad de Oviedo, but Virginia Tech students  normally are expected to have completed 3105 and 3106 with a “B” or better, or to have satisfactory proficiency in all Spanish language skills. Students are able to study in Oviedo who have not completed 3105 and 3106 by enrolling in the Casa de las Lenguas for an additional fee. If this option is selected, all levels of Spanish are welcomed from beginning to advanced, but it is highly recommended that students have completed the 1105 and 1106 sequence.
  • Receive transfer credit from the Universidad de Oviedo (between 12 to 15 credits per semester) to Virginia Tech in accordance with established transfer procedures. (Fill out the Authorization to Study Abroad form with Dr. Sarah Sierra the semester prior to traveling to Oviedo.)
